Supplements for Gastric Problems for Dog with Cancer

My collie has recently been diagnosed with cancer. A mass in throat has now turned out to be an inoperable infected polyp but he also has nodules on lungs.

Primary site still not known, it was originally thought to be throat. Has been prescribed Prednisone 10mg bd with review re further treatment in 6 weeks time. Originally only given a month to live.

He is very prone to gastric upsets. He has biopremium once a day permanently.

Can I give him anything else in the way of supplements to counter gastric problems that can occur with prednisone?

Hi, Lindsey,

First of all, I am sorry to hear that your collie Jig has cancer.

For gastric upsets, I was going to suggest probiotics. However, since he is already taking Bio Premium (which as I understand it contains pre- and probiotics) every day, additional supplementation may not be necessary.

You may want to consider giving him digestive enzymes though. Digestive enzymes help pets with cancer absorb nutrients better. Supplementation can also help replenish the gastrointestinal tract when naturally occurring enzymes are destroyed by chemo and other strong drugs. Ask your vet about enzyme supplementation.

Finally, it may also be advisable to strengthen your dog's immune system by giving him antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and Coenzyme Q10. With a stronger immune system, his body will be more capable of fighting cancer (and less prone to GI upset as well).
